How different industries collaborate (case study Destruna, Meta Runner and RWBY)

Destruna Pilot episode

Destruna is an animated series that as of yet has not been green-lit. Dispite this a lot of work has been put into the pilot episode.

One of the artists designed a picture for the web designers to use on their website and if the series becomes successful enough it could be used as a poster which could be sold in a merchandise shop.

Studio Destruna Are an animation studio who tried to make an animated series for early teenagers but was rejected from Netflix due to it being aimed at an audience that's too young.

Studio Destruna can be considered a branch of the youtube channel Super Planet Dolan which is branched from Planet Dolan.

The man in charge of Planet Dolan wanted to make an animated series.

It's possible he did it to escape his past as a low quality list channel.

He made a storyboard with simple replicas of his avatar to represent the different characters, which were changed later.

This is because he didn't have the character designs finished at the time of making the first storyboard.

Due to the pandemic the whole process was hectic. They were testing the scenes animating and reanimating. They eventually had an in joke that they'll have the pilot finished minutes before the deadline.

They had to get a pilot finished within a certain time-frame in order to show it to Netflix. In the end they posted the pilot on the Super Planet Dolan YouTube channel.

Job roles in Destruna

The writers create the scene then it's handed over to the story-boarders who make a storyboard to give the animators an idea of how the animation is supposed to look.

The concept artists talk to the writers and directors to get an idea of what the character looks like. When a design is finalized it's handed over to the modelling team who then hand it over to the riggers who put in a digital endoskeleton its at this point the animators get involved.

Animators directors and rigging artists need to be in contact s that if the animation looks off they can work out if the rig needs adapting or if the animation sequence needs tweaking.

Set designers use reference images and they stay in contact with the rest of the team so they remain in the same aesthetic.

Employment contracts in the animation industry.

Full time usually means working 5 days a week from Monday until Friday. The hours worked are usually 7 with a 1 hour break in some companies this may vary and the details of the working hours is stipulated in the contract.

The contract will state the rate of pay this may be given as an hourly rate of pay so that the employee would be paid for 35 hours per week if they had a full time contract and worked 7 hours a day. the rate of pay may be given as an annual salary.

the contract will also include holiday allowance, the terms under which the contract can be ended for example the employer may ask for one month's notice but again this may vary. Included in the terms and conditions of the contract might be details of any bonuses that might be available.

In the case of the animation industry there may be a project with deadlines and in order to motivate the staff to meet the deadlines, a financial bonus may be offered.

If the company takes a shine to a particular employee they may give them superior equipment. In some companies staff are given extra holiday allowance when they have worked for the company for a long time.

An employee who works part time works for less than 35 hours a week. Part time can mean that the employee either works part of the week but not the whole week or part of the day but not the whole day. The terms and conditions apply in exactly the same way as they do for a full time worker.

Employment laws apply to part time and full time workers.

The difference between outsourcing and subcontracting is that outsourcing is getting a third party company to do all the animation while the main company handles the business side whereas subcontracting is a collaborative effort of different animation companies.

Freelance means moving from company to company working on different projects. This can also mean that work can be scarce at times.

An animation company may find a freelance animator and take them on for a specific project. They will give the freelance worker a brief to work too which means they will tell them what type of animation they want produced and the timescale involved a freelance worker is then said to be working to a brief and the brief will include details of the penalties incurred for not meeting the deadlines.

The animation industry and the fashion industry collaborated to make the Meta Runner hoodie which was requested by fans of the show as well as countless other garments such as the Tari Vibin jumper which I love.

Glitch productions teamed up with Juniper to make all their merchandise but since the company has production in China and Glitch are Australian this creates confusion when it comes to the size of the garments.

Rooster Teeth have outsourced the creation of their figurines to Pop Up Parade who have a close connection with the Good Smile Company possibly even being a division if them. They are most likely Japanese.

The video game industry collaborated with the toy industry when the Mighty Number 9 Xel plush toys were made. The game is so obscure I can't find out which company made the toys however I do know it was a Kickstarter exclusive.
