There was a case where Thomas the Tank Engine characters were being modded into Skyrim to play the role of the dragons. This upset Mattel because it wasn't in character. Clearly nothing came of it since there are games to this day where Thomas is moded in.
Copyright may affect my work since the only logo for my work is my Google account profile picture which I did make but I made it out of other people's pictures I found online. If I want to stay out of legal trouble I'll need to hire someone to redraw it.
The data protection act is a series of laws that aim to protect the public data. Which is the reason companies must say what they're going to do with their customer's data and there are dire consequences for hiding a data breach.
Twitch recently had a data breach which revealed the source code, earnings of uses and plenty of other information.
Data protection may affect my work because I can't afford good cyber security and someone is definitely going to hack me out of revenge for something I said a long time ago.
Libel is a damaging statement that's written down and slander is the same but spoken.
The defamation case I can remember is the one with Johnny Depp and his now ex wife.
Libel and slander could affect me through cancel culture which can't be stopped, you can only be prepared.
A legal contract is an agreement protected by law that two or more parties will do something that will benefit the other parties. Three contract types 1. employment contract where the employer and employee have responsibilities during the employment time. 2. Non disclosure agreement which is where the one who signs it mustn't speak about a company to anyone. 3. Waver's which are where the signer agrees not to sue a certain party. Most of the time a person working in the media is given a brief and they have to follow it or they get laid off. Breach of contracts can end up in court.
I cant find a media example of a breach of contract.
Accessibility on a website means that disabled people can get the most out of your website.
The voice of Siri has started a campaign for online accessibility.
As an autistic person there are countless examples of us being either represented as protojies, helpless mutes or robots and this affects how people see and treat us. When we're not being like Rain man we're labeled as stupid burdans and blamed for any parents separation. Not to mention the organisations that claim to help us but actually torture us into being normal.
Take the Sia movie Music which showed dangerous ways to deal with meltdowns (crushing) and was insulting to autistic people.
However there is a movie that has good autistic representation and that is Mary and Max in which Max is a good character while also being a good representation of autistic people.
What probably helped was basing him on a real autistic person.
I've also found a problem with how a certain subculture is seen and represented.
There's a rumour going round that the reason so many animated females are goth/punk is because they satisfy the character designer's sexual fantasy. I am a goth but I don't fit the stereotype of being kinky mainly because I'm a virgin who's afraid of penises.
An IP stands for an intellectual property or something created from a person's mind such as symbols, names and images. copyright is the law that states who owns which ideas the types of fair dealing is the term for legal exceptions to copyright law such as parody, pastiche, criticism and educational purposes. Trademarks are for when a company wants to legally protect a slogan. Patents are a way to protect ideas and inventions within the extent of the law.
Contracts could affect me very badly because I am terrible with legal matters.
I aim to make my website as accessible as possible but some typefaces are incompatible with text to speech programs.
Blasphemy is saying or doing something sacrilegious against a certain religion.
Greggs have been accused of blasphemy by replacing baby Jesus with a sausage roll.
I doubt I will get in trouble for those blasphemous drawings I drew as a kid because I didn't know any better.
Ethics are important in media as they maintain trust with all people involved and is a guide on how to treat others plus it's the right thing to do.
Dumbing down is making something digestible to the average idiot. The most infamous example from the internet is Behind The Meme who was accused of dumbing things down so much it threatened all memes. Allegations were true albeit highly exaggerated. Memes will always prosper.
There is also the conspiracy theory that the government makes media intentionally dumb to make the public easier to control.
The hypodermic needle hypothesis states that the media injects ideas into an audience and the audience passively absorbs all of it without thinking. I shall use an experiment as an example. Subjects were given different types of games to play and told to give either easy or hard puzzles to other people. The ones who played Pro Social games like Super Mario Sunshine gave easier puzzles to other people.
The cultivation theory states that over time and constant media exposure we can become desensitized to certain things.
The two step flow theory says that we're not influenced by the media directly but by it's discussion.
Raid Shadow Legends and various VPN services have become infamous for sponsoring every low level you tuber on the platform. They have mastered pester power.
The uses and gratifications theory says that everyone consumes media differently; diversion, a distraction from daily life and an emotional release, personal relationships because it can make us feel like we're in a tightly knit group (dating simulators could be considered an example), personal identity to explore or reinforcing ideologies or sense of self, surveillance so consumers know what's going on in the world and educational purposes. I stumbled across a video that shows five ways to apologize for eating someone's pudding in Japanese.

In maintaining relationships with clients in the film industry certain ethics can be lost such as censoring LGBT+ material or white washing. However there was an incident where game developers from Cambridge deliberately made their clients angry by designing a character differently.
