Presentation Types, styles and Skills
Types
There are two main types: formal and informal
An example of a formal presentation is a board meeting. The presenters have formal body language and a formal manner of speaking. There may also be visual aid usually to show data.
A daily brief is a briefing given summing up the news of one day and is given off in a profesional, formal manner.
A business pitch is when one person or a group of people presents their idea for a business. It can follow any of the formal presentation styles discussed later. What's important is getting the idea across in a professional manner within a timeframe if necessary.
An example of an informal presentation is a video game presentation at an event such as E3. The presenters speak in a clear confident way and some of the visual aids ad an air of showmanship and referencing the games presented such as the fake error message which turned into a Glados cameo.
An interview can be seen as a presentation especially since it allows the interviewer to have a long speech about the company. This kind of presentation is where either party could be the audience or the presenter depending on whose turn it is to speak. The CV and cover letter can act as slides.
It's possible that the interview may be a group interview which makes it more like a classic presentation but include audience participation.
A team presentation is when a group of people who work together do a presentation as a team. You'll often find that one member creates all the slides while the rest do the speech, the role of researcher however is evenly spread.
Styles
Visual style is good for large crowds and focuses a lot on visual aids, believing that they're there purely there to compliment the topic being talked about. It can be either formal or casual. It's suited for large crowds with a general interest and is good when you need to accumulate slides quickly. There seems to be no difference between Freeform and Storytelling but you'd be wrong, the main difference is whether you want to be perceived as casual or heartfelt. If you want both go for a blend of the two. Freeform is for Networking, elevator pitches, and unexpected meetings. Freeform gives off a conversational feel and seems less manipulative.
Instructional is highly structured, requires a lot of planning and is most well suited to complex messages. Other qualities include high impact visuals, figures of speech, metaphors and plenty of resources. It's very similar to how teachers give lessons as such it's built on logic.
Coach style is needed if you want to connect and engage with audiences. It's wild and energetic and is good at getting across an idea of what a company does rather than actual data about what they do. It can also be used to put people at ease.
Skills
Some of the skills involved are open body language and projecting your voice. Open body language makes it look like you want to be there and makes people respect you. Projecting your voice allows the whole audience to hear you.
