Working with Digital Files
Things to consider in digital file usage are; the purpose, file type, screen or print, CMYK or RGB, native software, vector graphics or raster graphics.
Storage
Cloud storage is often used as a back up of what is on a computer's hard drive. The cloud is a collection of larger servers that a company provides to ordinary customers.
File naming
- Special characters are not allowed in file naming except underscores which break up words another way is to use capitals at the beginning of each letter
- some people recommend a numbering system especially when it comes to different versions
- watch out for (d) as that could indicate that it's a draft file meaning it's not the final version
- short names are a definite plus as are logical abbreviations
File Formats
PNG's can have a transparent background so they're used for website logos another reason for this is they have the lossless attribute making them able to be opened and closed a lot of times without quality loss.
JPEG's cant have a transparent part but are good for photos due to their high amount of detail and colour but are lossy, due to this they lose quality every time they're opened.
SVG stands for scalable vector graphic, these are graphics using vectors and as a result they're scalable meaning that unlike raster graphics these don't lose quality when scaled up since raster graphics use pixels and vector graphics don't. both kinds can be converted into each other although they might look a little off since the vector needs anchor points. Vector's also take up less space despite how much they get scaled up or down, the same can't be said for the raster graphics which take up more space even when scaled up.
A PDF is a portable document folder which is very effective for sending documents since it will be open and readable even if the person's computer lacks certain applications
HTML is a link to a website.
